CalPac Brings AVID College Readiness Program Online

As one of the only charter schools offering the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) college readiness program online, CalPac is changing the way students view and prepare for their futures. Research shows that two years of middle school in AVID can positively impact a student’s academic performance in high school, and 90 percent of AVID graduates in California said the program prepared them well for college.

What is AVID?

Established more than 35 years ago, AVID is a global, non-profit organization dedicated to preparing students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. The AVID program is designed to develop students’ organizational skills, study skills, and critical thinking so that they are college- and career-ready upon high school graduation. It is traditionally offered in a face-to-face setting, but CalPac has successfully converted the program to fit within our virtual learning model.

AVID students attend a home-based, hour-long class daily. The class is delivered through instruction three days each week and through tutorials led by current college students two days each week as part of the AVID elective class. The instruction sessions are based on the WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Communication, Organization and Reading) curriculum, which provides a well-rounded education while growing students’ potential to become leaders and achievers.

How Does AVID Prepare Students for College and Life?

AVID closes the achievement gap for students by:

  • Teaching skills and behaviors for academic success
  • Developing deep, core content knowledge and critical thinking
  • Providing intensive support with tutorials
  • Building strong student-teacher relationships
  • Creating a positive peer group for students
  • Instilling optimism for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
  • Encouraging students to become active leaders and help others

At CalPac, the AVID program is frequently described as a family. We place strong emphasis on truly connecting with students on a daily basis, and not only guiding them, but teaching them how to guide themselves toward their goals.

Is AVID Right for Your Student?

Worldwide, nearly 1.5 million students in 46 states and 16 countries are using the AVID Program for college readiness. AVID is available to all students, and is especially effective for students who are “in the middle,” meaning they show potential to go from sound to exceptional academic performance. At CalPac, students complete an AVID application and interview and are selected based on a variety of attributes. AVID students are encouraged to take advanced honors and AP classes, and work with an AVID counselor through the college application process.

Insight from a CalPac AVID Student

To gain student perspective of AVID’s impact, we spoke with one of our students in the program. Sam is an eighth-grader who has been in AVID for two years. Here’s what she had to say:

“AVID has given me a lot of good insight on what I want to do for college, where I want to go, and how I can get ready for college when I’m in high school. The really cool part is that we do everything together and help each other. I talk to my friends through instant message and email, and although I want to get the highest score on every assignment, I also enjoy helping my classmates do well in the program.”

Sam added that she plans on taking as many AP classes as possible in high school to get ahead on college credits. She hopes to attend a four-year college on a volleyball scholarship.

“I think college will give me that extra push in life,” Sam said. “When I start my job and career, I want to be the best.”
